The Mormon experience in Missouri reveals many things about 1830's America. Religious movements were common in this era but most grew out of established religions. The Mormon religion, considered the only uniquely American religion, was different. Spreading rapidly, the church's beliefs threatened these groups.

Why did violence erupt? Relying on the militia system to maintain civil order, states were ill equipped to deal with unrest- especially when the unrest involves popular sentiment.
